Do you mean apostic or apostolic? Pauline just means it was written by Paul. Several of the books attributed to him through tradition were actually written by people trying to claim Paul's reputation. It may have not been fraudulent. There were different views of authorship. Knowing that scholars don't believe that several books were written by him, I notice a clear difference in the writing style.

Paul, leading authority on Christianity, does NOT quote Jesus!
by Terry inpaul's letters practically invent christianity.. the gospels trickled in after him.. paul never walked with jesus and yet explains him.. never a quote from the master at all.. yet, paul is such a maven.. if jesus couldn't be bothered to actually reveal what he was all about to his apostles with whom he ate, drank, spoke and slept---why this persecutor, saul?.
the apostles heard every word jesus spoke and were willing to die for him.. paul didn't--yet--miraculously explained every detail of the entire history of god's purpose including his messiah.. .
can anybody provide a non-gimmick answer?.

We don't if Paul was the first to write Christian theology and discuss Jesus. The gospel narratives were not necessary b/c orall stories prob. proliferated. The Jewish group, led by James, seems to have markedly different teachings than Paul. The battle lines are already drawn. Someone could have written earlier than Paul. No manuscript has been found yet. I doubt if James/Peter faction were truly swayed by the force of Paul's arguments. We are missing much of the correspondence to Paul from the Christian congregations. Again, I don't think any theory is conclusive. Everything must be qualified with what has surfaced to this date.
It is strange to me how no or few Gnostic gospels survived. I recall that a father and son entered caves to hide weapons during an Israeli-Palestinian war. Now more and more are appearing. It seems that more and more surface as we go forward in time. The reverse would seem logical.

wicked people actually "witnessing" about jehovah.
by man in black inwhile reading the last post about light bulb moments, i thought of something that once really impressed me as a witness.. .
every once in a while at the ca /da / or service meeting a part would pop up about how the witnesses would run into a dissinterested person.. perhaps this person would yell, threaten, or just be plain mean.
but the part that always was made was how if this worldly person used the name jehovah.

It is the overwhelming consensus that Jehovah is wrong. Their calling God does me a service. Jehovah is my Satan. I rebuke him to get behind me. God is my name for the love and grace concept formulation. YAHWEH I use as the term Jews may have used for the personal God. It confuses me though b/c I lived in NY forever. Jews won't write God. They write G-D or YHWH. I see I am what I am as God refusing to be limited by a name. YHWY or Jehovah are absurd. Why not Mordechai or Stewart? Why not a dog name? If God is transcedent and it is the main core of the religion, why would God go by a common name? I assume the surrounding tribes gods had name, like Zeus, etc. Maybe YHWH is a remnant of that.
Jews believe God so not human that they were genuinely terrorized by the assertions regarding Jesus. I don't know.

I studied gnosticism at Columbia with the leading scholar in this country, Elaine Pagels, now at Princeton. Paul is not a Gnostic. Jesus is very real and tangible to him. The conversion experience where he loses sight and hears what no one else hears is recorded as actually happening. A Gnostic would talk about the appearance. He did not reject physical creation.
Scholars are certain that Mark, Matthew and Luke are from a single source of sayings of Jesus, known as Q. A copy of Q has not been found as of this date. So much has recently come to light, maybe it will appear. Paul's letters contain a lack of early credal statements which indicate that creeds were determined from an early date.
It is possible that each particular group interpreted Jesus for their own ends. Jesus evidently did not feel it was important to have clarity. I'd call his evasions about whether he was the messiah to be almost coy. Greek Jews would emphasize one strand while Jewish Christians would emphasize another. Recently, I read a book about Paul and Rome by dominic Crossan. It is his theory that Paul did not preach to Gentiles in general but rather to "godfearers" within Jesus synogogues. Many Greeks and Romans were attracted by the monotheism of Judaism which stood in stark contrast to their home religions. Circumcision required too much. They would worship with the Jews and study the scriptures. Indeed, the opening chapters of Act deals with the apostle who runs down the highway after the Greek who just happens to be studying Isaiah as he is carted along.
I've spent my adult life studying New Testament, gnosticism and early Christianity. I don't think it can be accessed by definite statements. When people ask me what happened, I always say the Bible says this but I was not personally there to witness it with my own eyes. If it ever gets too neat, I know I am off the road. We only have a few of the documents that were available and we have no access to eyewitnesses. The apostles seem pretty clueless for people who witnesses this first hand. Sometimes I have this feeling if certainty were important, Jesus could have preached in a clearer fashion.
Another thing is from reading wikipedia on eastern and Indian Christianity lately is that we emphasize a western Roman view of things. Coptic and Indian Christians have very different takes. Carl Jung said we don't accurately read Jesus b/c we project our own desires on him. Hence, Rembrandt and his Dutch borgeois Nativity. Jesus evolves through art history. The only thing I truly know is that the WT is wrong on most history.

Do you think the Witnesses are targeted more for vandalism. All my Anglican churches have stained glass windows. Windows that could never be replaced. They went up before federal income tax of the wealthy. An alternative would have to be found. I don't see Catholics or other churches covering their windows.
It says something to me about aesthetics. Whenever I went to some event in Brooklyn Heights, my colleagues expressed much grief at the plastic flowers in a real flower district. Years ago I would dismiss windows and fresh flowers as diversions. Now they are very important. Art feeds my soul as does daylight. Flourescent lights are hell for me. I installed some at home for energy reasons. Within 15 minutes, I retrieved the incadescent builbs from the trash and tossed the flourescent lights.

When I active, KH had windows. The classier one had glass walls. I notice as I go about urban areas that they no longer have windows. May I ask why? I would feel utterly suffocated without windows. Sun is impt for health reasons. What happened?

I don't believe it. Also, I won't believe when Dick Clark goes. He was on syndicated tv in the fifties. I never worked out with him on air. It was fun just watching him. What a body! He was ahead of his time. Between Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons and jack LaLane, I'll take Lalane. I hope he was healthy until he died.
George Burns was truly amazing and sharp. And my personal hero, John Lennon, was murdered at 40. Sad.

I need help with what to believe?
by hannahmcmanus ini've been jehovah's witness for about a year now, and recently i've been finding problems in some teachings that my parents and congregation can't answer satisfactorily.
since i began voicing my issues my mum in particular has become increasingly overbearing and, although she says there's nothing wrong with asking questions, it's obvious she doesn't like me having doubts and not accepting her answers, even though they don't explain any of my problems.
it feels like i'm being forced down a path that i don't want to take, but i don't know what to do.

Your age makes a big difference. When I read the title, I was going to reply that asking others what to believe is what involved you with the Witnesses. You sound like me. Your parents are raising you in it. My sense of safety was severely shaken when my local brothers who were functionally illiterate misread fifth grade writing. It would be no big deal but the Holy Spirit slays those who sin against it. I felt cursed by Jehovah with reading comprehension.
Few things in life are more important than asking questions. I accumulated many questions. My most pressing question was did I believe a loving God would destroy all his creation, esp.my school friends, teachers and relatives? I could not. It wasn't intellectual. My gut reacted. I hated all the meaningless restrictions. I knew Catholics, Methodists and saw in them much better examples of Christians than the Witnesses were. Jesus is emphatic that we reach out to the poor and oppressed. What you do to the least of these, you do for me. The Witnesses let their own starve and go homeless while they constantly build huge factories. Why are the factories needed if the end of the world is upon us? I could not believe paradise would involve burying the remains of all those dead people. The strench would be unbelievable. What about depression? There would not be enough Witnesses to get the bodies in the ground or fire. The Red Cross will not be around.
I could not talk to my parents about my doubts. My father dragged me into the KH against my will. I refused to participate so he pinched me for all the KH to see. It is awkward being a teen b/c you have your own beliefs and instincts but you are in their custody. My father was extremely abusive. I fought for life itself. Looking back, my acts of assertion were not healthy in terms of staying alive. I was going to be pulled out of high school when Ivy League scholarships awaited me. I had to talk to the principal about going to a foster home. Teen years should be fun. My father died before it went to court. We could breathe for the first time. O, Blessed Death.
Trust your gut and respect your parents. They might embrace you no matter. I reached out to a teen fashion magazine to get help. The wrote me a private letter to my girlfriend so my parents would not know. The help was timely and appreciated. It may seem like an eternity now but you will have freedom. No one can know what you think in your own mind. They are your thoughts. Even today, many decades later, I always err when I don't trust my gut. The Witnesses will have you dishonor your gut. I'd suggest honoring your gut.

The NWT is seriously flawed. No one on the committee had expertise to undertake such a project. When you start with doctrine and notice how every exisitng translation is opposed to your doctrine, you don't approach your translation with neutral eyes. The translatio nis going to flatter your doctrine. Hebrew and Koine Greek cannot be picked up the way one learns French, Italian or German. Connotations are crucial.
